How is waste water treated ?
The treatement method may have some modifications depends on the nature and quantity of the effluent generated. The general procedure is having a basic collection tank (sewage balancing tank) for collection and mixing to get a uniform mixture of effluent. The collected water is pased through a clariifer to remove any suspended solids and other undissolved materials and then it is fed to an aeration tank (bio digestor ). Upto this stage is konwn as Primary Treatment. In Secondary treatment, aerobic bio degradation of effluent under activated sludge process is taking place at the aeration tank and the process is known as Aerobic activated sludge process. Some cases where high BOD and COD observed, anerobice bio digesters also used where there is no aeration during the activated sludge process. In the Tertioary treatment, water generated after the bological treatemen is separated from sludge and suspended solids by means of a clarifier and/or sand filters and finally an activated carbon filter. The filtered water is then disinfected to kill all the bacteria present in it by either chlorination or ozonation or with ultra violet light.
